'Miniatures' was conceived as sound installation for an exhibition of tiny artworks in Glasgow. It was inspired by the life and work of Peter Carl Fabergé (30 May 1846 – 24 September 1920).

Fabergé was a Russian jeweller famed most for his Fabergé eggs, extravagant imitations of Easter eggs made from the most precious materials, and containing tiny, delicate surprises for the last Tsars of Russia. Fabergé was commissioned to produce two of these a year from 1887 onwards, with the designs and surprises remaining unknown until their presentation. Fabergé continued making the eggs for the Imperial Family until the Russian Revolution in 1917.

As physical objects, the eggs are miniatures that contain vast wonders - a relationship of scales that becomes even more apparent when their physical size is contrasted with their scope as cultural and economic artefacts. 'Miniatures' explores this encapsulation of the large in the small by constructing a vast soundscape from five small compositions that in their varying repetitions create textures and spaces that constantly shift and evolve into sonic events far larger than the individual works that comprise them.

It was intended that each composition would be played from a separate sound source distinct in space.
